Spinal cord injuries can come from a variety of accidents and incidents.  The spinal cord is absolutely crucial to the proper functioning of the human body. It runs from the base of the brain down the neck, through the mid back and into the low back, and all of the nerves that control the body run off of the spinal cord.  When the spinal cord is injured, it can cause death, or it can bring about many serious medical complications when the nerves are cut.  Although it is possible for nerves to show some re-growth, most of time there are still significant limitations which will last a lifetime.

According to the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center (NSCSC), there are over 17,000 people in the United States that suffer spinal cord injuries each year and live.  Almost 78% of people suffering a spinal cord injury are males.  According to the statistics, the most common cause of a spinal cord injury is a motor vehicle accident.  Over 39% of all spinal cord injuries come from motor vehicle crashes.  The next most common cause of a spinal cord injury is a fall.  Over 33% of spinal cord injuries come from falls.  An “incomplete” spinal cord injury occurs whenever a spinal cord injury survivor retains some feeling below the site of the injury and a “compete” spinal cord injury occurs where there is no feeling below the site of the injured spinal cord.  Incomplete tetraplegia (also known as quadriplegia), is a type of incomplete spinal cord injury that affects both the arms and legs but there is still some feeling.  An incomplete paraplegia is a type of incomplete spinal cord injury that affects just the legs.  Incomplete tetraplegia is the single most common form of spinal cord injury, accounting for 40.8% of all spinal cord injuries.

We have helped clients who have suffered spinal cord injuries from a car wreck, a motorcycle crash, an ATV crash, a fall, a defective automobile seat, a job injury and a swimming pool accident. These are just a handful of ways people have injured their spinal cord.  Some people with a spinal cord injury make a full recovery with the proper medical care.  However, many people with these injuries have some limitations.  Severe spinal cord injuries can be very expensive to treat because there is normally a need for a lifetime of medical care and a lifetime of living accommodations.

We have worked with a doctors who are experienced in treating traumatically caused spinal cord injuries.  In Georgia, we are fortunate to have the Shepherd Center, located in Atlanta.  The Shepherd Center is known world-wide as one of the top spinal cord injury treatment facilities, and they offer state of the art treatments and therapies to patients with spinal cord injuries.  In working with spinal cord injury clients, we often have to structure their settlements so as to not put the person at risk of losing valuable governmental help, such as medical benefits and other needs based assistance.  To avoid these problems, when we make a large recovery of money for a client with a spinal cord injury we use things like a special needs trust to hold the settlement money for the benefit of our clients so they can keep all available governmental assistance they can get.
